Life Across the Bay
The photos you’re about to look at are inspired by my love of the Eastern Shore; hence the title, “Life Across the Bay”. My grandparents have a house in Parksley, VA that was passed down from my great grandmother which I have been going to for as long as I can remember. Countless summers, holidays, and family get-togethers have been spent there, so I have made a ton of amazing memories, and continue to make more with friends I bring along. For this project, the medium I chose is colored digital photography. You will see a variety of subjects throughout this body of work like abandoned buildings, small towns, farmland, etc. This is so I could capture and give you a glimpse of “Life Across the Bay”. When I started, I wasn’t too sure how to go about it. In my head, there was so much to show and I didn’t know how to capture the subjects in a meaningful style that would help showcase them in the way I envisioned it. As the weeks went on accompanied by feedback from classmates and family, I started to see my project improve and slowly come together. There were a couple of weeks I was already on the Shore at my grandparents’ house while others I made either a half or full-day adventure just across the Bay Bridge. As I drove around and explored, I switched between two lenses; an f/2.8 24-70mm, and an f/4 70-200mm. The 24-70 I used for just about everything; from the small towns to abandoned buildings and landscapes whereas the 70-200 was more for things I couldn’t reach with the other lens and an occasional seagull. As you look through these pictures, first, you’ll see plenty of colors throughout; from the buildings to the sky since I took pictures at various times of the day. Second, you’ll get a glimpse of what life is like in several places across the bay. For some, it’ll bring back heartfelt memories of living in a small town, perhaps even the hometown they grew up in, while for others it will give them a chance to see what life is/was like in these quaint towns. Lastly, you’ll understand that nature, history, and tradition all play a part for so many people including myself in “Life Across the Bay”.
